What Is Nasya? (And Why You Might Want to Try It)

So, have you ever heard of Nasya? Don’t worry if you haven’t—most people haven’t unless they’ve dipped their toes into the world of Ayurveda (that’s the traditional wellness system from India that’s all about balancing your body and mind in natural ways).

Let me break it down simply, because Nasya is one of those beautiful little self-care practices that can change how your head feels, quite literally!

Nasya (pronounced NAH-sya) is an Ayurvedic treatment where you put a few drops of herbal oil into your nose. Yep, straight up the nostrils!

Sounds strange? Maybe a little. But stay with me: it’s deeply cleansing and incredibly calming once you understand why it’s done.

In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the gateway to the head and brain. So when things feel foggy, tense, dry, or blocked up—Nasya is a way to support clarity and balance.

Why would you put oil in your nose?

Great question.

Here's why people use Nasya:

  • To clear nasal congestion

  • To relieve headaches or sinus pressure

  • To reduce stress and calm the nervous system

  • To help with allergies or dryness in the sinuses

  • To improve mental clarity, memory, and focus

  • Some people even say it helps with emotions stuck in the body

Ayurveda believes that toxins (called "ama") can accumulate in the head and neck area, especially from things like poor sleep, stress, or pollution. Nasya helps gently remove that buildup.

What does a Nasya routine look like?

Here’s a super simple version:

  1. Warm up a little Nasya oil (you can buy special herbal ones, or use a simple sesame oil if you're just starting out).

  2. Lie back or tilt your head slightly.

  3. Put 2–3 drops in each nostril.

  4. Sniff gently and let the oil work its way in.

  5. Rest for a minute or two and breathe deeply.

Some people also massage around their nose, cheeks, and forehead afterward to help the oil absorb and relax the muscles.
